Sivasagar: Basanta Gogoi, president of ATASU, said on Monday that the organisation would call a bandh on the 6th, alleging that the administration had failed to act against encroachment and activities affecting Jamuna in Sivasagar.

Gogoi alleged that some people had turned part of Jamuna into a goat-slaughter site and were dumping faeces, urine and slaughter waste there. He said ATASU had asked the administration, the government and the local Sivasagar MLA to intervene, but claimed no action had followed.

Calling the matter one of heritage and community pride, Gogoi said ATASU would not compromise on its protection. He said the organisation was acting on information it had received earlier, while rejecting claims made on Facebook that its Jamuna campaign was intended to divert attention from the flood issue.

Gogoi said neither the BJP, Congress nor Raijor Dal was close to the organisation, and maintained that ATASU stood with the public and with heritage conservation. He demanded that the site be cleared and conserved scientifically, saying the agitation would continue until that happened.

He also alleged that pressure had been exerted through calls to the Sivasagar DC and ADC over discussions involving a contractor. Gogoi warned that ATASU members were prepared to face legal cases or jail, and said they would remove boats and structures themselves if the administration did not act. No response from the administration, government, local MLA or any contractor was available in the video.

The proposed bandh, Gogoi said, would be held because of what he described as administrative non-compliance. He said the organisation would continue its movement over the issue.
