MAJULI: A special POCSO court in Majuli sentenced school watchman Madhab Mili to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment on Friday for raping a Class VIII student on the school premises.

The court found Mili guilty of sexually assaulting the minor. It also imposed a fine on him and directed that the amount be used for the victim's rehabilitation and mental recovery.

According to the prosecution, Mili used his position as the school's watchman to target the girl. The case was supported by medical examinations, forensic reports and testimonies of the survivor and her family members.

While delivering the judgment, the court noted the gravity of a school employee abusing a student within the school premises. Mili was remanded to serve the sentence immediately.

Child welfare activists in Majuli called on the state government to enforce stricter background verification of non-teaching staff in government and private institutions.
