In his retirement message, Shami described wearing India's Test jersey as a dream come true. He said every wicket, struggle, injury and comeback had taught him valuable lessons. He also described Test cricket as a particularly special part of his life.
Shami thanked his teammates, coaches, family members, fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for their support throughout his career.
His last Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. Injuries disrupted different phases of his career, but he remains keen to continue playing limited-overs cricket and domestic matches.
