Young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been appointed captain of Bihar’s senior cricket team for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He will lead the side in its opening two matches of the tournament.

The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced a 17-member squad on Friday. Suraj Kashyap has been named vice-captain. This will be Sooryavanshi’s first assignment as captain of the senior team.

Bihar will begin its campaign against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14. The team has been placed in Group B alongside Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Sooryavanshi represents Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He had an outstanding 2026 season, scoring 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of over 237. He finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer.

He has also played 10 T20 Internationals for India. Earlier, he made headlines with a 175-run innings off 80 balls against England in the Under-19 World Cup final, helping India secure a 100-run victory.

BCA president Harsh Vardhan said the captaincy would give Sooryavanshi an opportunity to grow as a leader. He expressed confidence in the youngster’s talent, confidence and understanding of the game, and hoped the team would perform with discipline under his leadership.
