Dibrugarh, November 5: A dispute has emerged over the handover of the body of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the accused in the Guwahati Hotel Bilas Inn shooting case. The family has reportedly insisted that the body be handed over today, saying it will not accept it if the police fail to do so.
The post-mortem examination has also been delayed, with authorities unable to complete the procedure for the past two days. Even after 4 pm on Thursday, the examination had not been conducted, and the body remained at the morgue of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
Gogoi was arrested in connection with the October 26 shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati, in which five people were killed. After completing seven days of police remand, he was sent to judicial custody on November 3.
However, Gogoi died in police firing in the early hours of November 4 while being taken to Sivasagar. According to the police version, the incident occurred near Phulpanisiga when the police vehicle had stopped. Police alleged that Gogoi attempted to escape and tried to snatch a service revolver from a police officer. The police claimed that they opened fire in self-defence.
His body was initially taken to Sivasagar Civil Hospital. It was later shifted to AMCH in Dibrugarh due to a lack of the required facilities and a forensic specialist for the post-mortem. A three-member medical board was also constituted to conduct the examination.
