Guwahati, November 3: The seven-day police remand of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the accused in the Hotel Bilas Inn shooting case, ended on Monday. He was subsequently produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, which sent him to judicial custody.
On October 26, a shooting incident at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati left five people dead, including four members of the hotel owner's family. Another person was injured. Gogoi was arrested following the incident and remanded to seven days of police custody.
Police had suspected that a dispute over the hotel's lease and management could be behind the incident. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case and is examining various aspects.
Earlier, police conducted a search lasting nearly three hours at Gogoi's rented residence in the Saukuchi area. No significant evidence was reportedly recovered during the search. Documents related to the lease and car keys were also not found.
Meanwhile, Gogoi's family had raised a claim of self-defence in connection with the shooting. Police are also examining this claim as part of the investigation.
With the end of his police remand and the court sending him to judicial custody, attention is now on the further investigation and legal proceedings in the case.
