Sivasagar, November 4: Uncertainty has emerged over the post-mortem examination of Ghanakanta Gogoi, who was killed in police firing. The superintendent of Sivasagar Civil Hospital has indicated that the examination may not be conducted at the hospital.
According to the superintendent, special procedures are required under the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in such cases. A forensic expert and doctors from three separate hospitals would be required to conduct the post-mortem at Sivasagar Civil Hospital.
In view of these requirements, the post-mortem may instead be conducted in Jorhat or at Assam Medical College. However, no final decision has been announced so far. Gogoi’s body continues to remain in the morgue of Sivasagar Civil Hospital.
Meanwhile, his family has expressed resentment over the circumstances surrounding his death. Family members have alleged that they were not officially informed when Gogoi was taken from Guwahati Central Jail to Sivasagar. One of his relatives also claimed that they came to know about his death in police firing through the media.
Gogoi was killed in police firing near Rongmon Dhaba at Phulpanichiga in the Gaurisagar area of Sivasagar district in the early hours of November 4. According to the police, he was being taken to Sivasagar in connection with another case. Police alleged that he attempted to snatch a service weapon and escape, following which they opened fire. A police sub-inspector was also injured in the incident.
Gogoi was the prime accused in the shooting at Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Bora Service area, in which five people were killed. Following his death, the post-mortem arrangements and the allegations raised by his family have brought the case back into focus.
