SIVASAGAR: Wanted accused Ghanakanta Gogoi was declared brought dead at a hospital after police fired during a scuffle while he was being brought from Guwahati on a production warrant, Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said.

The incident took place near Phulpanisiga along the highway under Gaurisagar police station, she said.

Chetia said Gogoi was wanted in a Punjab National Bank loan fraud case registered at Sivasagar Sadar police station. The investigation had remained pending as he had not been arrested.

Police learnt that Gogoi was in Guwahati and obtained a production warrant to bring him to Sivasagar, she said. During the journey, Gogoi asked to step out after the team reached Gaurisagar.

When police tried to restrain him, Gogoi allegedly attempted to snatch the service weapon of the investigating officer. Three rounds were discharged from the officer's service revolver during the scuffle, Chetia said.

The investigating officer sustained injuries in the scuffle and was admitted to Joysagar Civil Hospital. A personal security officer attached to the Sadar police station officer-in-charge then fired one round from his service weapon to save the injured officer, she said.

Gogoi was injured in the firing and was later declared brought dead at the hospital, Chetia said. She said the police team had initiated legal procedures following the incident.

The bank case involved an excavator bought on loan. Gogoi had allegedly submitted fake documents to obtain the loan, and the bank registered a case after detecting the irregularity after the loan was disbursed, she said.
