PALASBARI, Nov 8: Meghalaya has constructed and inaugurated a Lower Primary (LP) school at New Jalukpaham, a village along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border under the Palasbari Legislative Assembly Constituency, raising concerns among residents over territorial jurisdiction and Assam's administrative presence.
According to local sources, the school was built on land claimed to fall within Assam's territory and was completed and inaugurated within six months.
Local sources said the Shillong Missionary established the school to provide education to children in the remote hilly area. Three teachers from Meghalaya have reportedly been appointed to the institution.
Bimal Taroi, the village headman of New Jalukpaham, said the school would provide education up to Class 5.
The development has raised questions over land ownership, administrative clearances and whether the district administration and the Assam government were aware of the construction and functioning of the school. It has also highlighted inadequate education, healthcare, road connectivity and other basic facilities in villages along the inter-state border.
