SILCHAR: A man performed Pind Daan and other funeral rites for his living daughter at Panchanan Shiv Bari here on Friday, alleging that she had converted to Islam and married a man from the Itkhola area.
Binay Sharma, a resident of Hailakandi district who has been living in a rented house at Malugram in Silchar, said he took the step after learning of his daughter Baishali Sharma's conversion and marriage.
Sharma claimed that Baishali had married a man with the surname Parikh in Rajasthan around 12 years ago and had two children. He alleged that she later returned to Silchar with the children, refused to return to her marital home and subsequently left for Bengaluru without informing the family.
He said the family learnt on Wednesday that Baishali had returned to Silchar, converted to Islam and married a man from the Itkhola area. Sharma then approached Bajrang Dal members.
At the ceremony, conducted in the presence of a priest, Baishali's photograph was adorned with a white garland. Sharma said he considered his daughter dead to him and performed the rites because of the emotional distress caused by her decisions.
The claims about Baishali's marital history, her children and her recent marriage were based on her father's account. Her version could not be independently established.
