AGARTALA, Nov 8: The Tejas Rajdhani Express from New Delhi to Agartala operated with an electric locomotive for the first time, replacing the conventional diesel engine, railway sources said.
The electric locomotive-hauled train passed through Dharmanagar railway station on its onward journey to Agartala, the sources said. Dharmanagar is regarded as the gateway to Tripura.
The shift became possible after railway electrification work was completed on the Agartala-Lumding and Guwahati railway sections, the sources said. Electric locomotives can now operate on the connecting route.
The move is expected to improve energy efficiency and train performance, lower local emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. It could also facilitate the movement of passengers and goods, the sources said.
