November 4: Political reactions have emerged in India following the Republican Party’s setback in the US midterm elections, where Donald Trump’s party lost control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke took a sarcastic dig at India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the outcome.
In a post on X, Dipke wrote, “Gyanesh Kumar would’ve never let this happen to Trump.” His remark was widely interpreted as a sarcastic criticism of the Election Commission of India and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Dipke and his associates have repeatedly raised questions about India’s electoral process and the role of the Election Commission. They have alleged that the poll body, under Gyanesh Kumar’s leadership, provides electoral advantages to the BJP. These remain political allegations made by them.
‘A difficult time for aspiring dictators worldwide’
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das also reacted to the US election results. In a post on X, he said that Trump’s party had lost control of both the US House and Senate, adding that those attempting to become dictators around the world appeared to be facing difficult times.
Das further argued that the fight against authoritarian politics should not end with electoral victories or defeats. According to him, accountability must continue after elections, including that of leaders in power, their associates and everyone who aided them.
He also linked the political development to the declining appeal of the image of a ‘strong leader’ and the growing importance of democratic institutions, accountability and everyday public concerns. Das said voters were increasingly prioritising employment, economic stability and relief from inflation over politics based on hatred.
The remarks by Dipke and Das have brought renewed attention to debates surrounding electoral processes, democratic institutions and political accountability in India.
