Sonapur, November 5: Thousands of people gathered at Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur on Thursday, demanding justice in connection with the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The public gathering was organised by the Zubeen Garg Nyay Samiti following a call by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi.
Addressing the gathering, Gogoi expressed opposition to the possibility of bail for the accused. He warned that people would march towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s residence if the accused were granted bail on Friday.
Gogoi specifically referred to Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma, saying that if they secured bail, people would launch a protest march. He also called for the re-arrest and return to jail of Sandeepan Garg and Amritprabha Mahanta.
Several prominent personalities, including veteran singer Mahendra Hazarika, Bidyut Saikia, Gyanashree Bora, Bikash Asom, Marcel Barua and Sarat Saurav, attended the gathering and spoke in support of the demand for justice for Zubeen Garg.
The programme began with the lighting of lamps before the portrait of legendary singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika to mark his 15th death anniversary.
