November 4: The BJP has announced 45 candidates for the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, dropping incumbent Mayor Dipak Majumder, who is also the MLA from the Ramnagar Assembly constituency.

The candidate list was announced on November 3. Elections to 21 civic bodies across Tripura, including the AMC, are scheduled to be held on November 27.

State BJP president Abhishek Debroy said the party’s core committee had finalised the candidates after receiving approval from the central leadership. He added that the names of candidates for the remaining six AMC wards would be announced on November 4.

Explaining the decision to drop Majumder, Debroy said the party was following its principle of “one leader, one post”. He said an MLA has responsibilities towards the people and added that the BJP would highlight the good work carried out during Majumder’s tenure as mayor.

The BJP has also dropped some sitting corporators on various grounds, including reservation requirements and internal party considerations. Candidate lists for municipalities and nagar panchayats will be announced shortly, Debroy said.

On seat-sharing with ally Tipra Motha Party, the state BJP president said the party had offered it three wards across different municipalities.
