New Delhi, November 5: At least two people died and one injured person was rescued after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning. Several people are feared trapped beneath the debris.
The collapse was reported at around 9.50 am in Gali Sitara, near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station. Fire department teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident.
At least six fire units, including water tenders and rescue vehicles, have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations. Senior officers are present at the site and are supervising the operation.
The exact number of people trapped under the debris has not yet been confirmed. The cause of the collapse is also not immediately known.
The incident occurred amid increased footfall in Old Delhi’s busy wholesale markets ahead of Diwali. Chawri Bazaar and the nearby Chandni Chowk area usually witness heavy crowds of shoppers and traders during the festive season.
The latest collapse comes a day after a portion of the historic Town Hall building in Chandni Chowk reportedly collapsed. The more than 160-year-old heritage structure has raised concerns over the maintenance and safety of old buildings in the national capital.
