Silchar, November 3: Cachar Police have seized 47,000 bottles of cough syrup, allegedly concealed behind consignments of sugar, during an operation at the Balachara toll gate. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth Rs 1.26 crore.

The driver and the co-driver of the truck have been detained in connection with the incident. The vehicle bears registration number MP 33 H 2083.

Preliminary information suggests that the truck was travelling from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh to Tripura. Acting on a tip-off, Barak Valley police stopped the vehicle at the Balachara toll gate on Monday night and conducted a search.

During the inspection, officers found 47,000 bottles of cough syrup packed in 470 cartons inside the truck carrying sugar. The consignment was allegedly concealed behind the sugar load.

The operation was led by Kulendra Kumar Huzuri, Officer-in-Charge of Barak Valley Police Station. Both detained persons have been taken to the police station for questioning.

Police are investigating whether an organised network was involved in the alleged transportation, where the cough syrup was sourced from and its intended destination.
