The post-mortem examination of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the Bilas Inn hotel shooting in Guwahati that left five people dead, will be conducted at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

The examination was initially scheduled to be conducted at Sivasagar Civil Hospital. However, the decision was changed after authorities found that the hospital lacked the necessary facilities and a forensic specialist to carry out the procedure.

A three-member medical board has been constituted at AMCH to conduct the post-mortem examination. Further details about the examination and its findings are awaited.

Gogoi died in police firing in the early hours of November 4 near Rongmon Dhaba at Phulpanisiga, under Gorisagar Police Station in Sivasagar district. According to police, he allegedly attempted to escape and snatch a police officer’s service revolver while being taken from Guwahati to Sivasagar.

Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papari Chetia said Gogoi was being taken to Sivasagar on a production warrant in connection with a case involving alleged Punjab National Bank loan fraud. He was accused of obtaining a loan to purchase an excavator by submitting forged documents.

Police said three rounds were fired from the service revolver during the ensuing scuffle, leaving one police officer seriously injured. The officer-in-charge of Sivasagar Sadar Police Station subsequently fired at Gogoi to overpower him. He was taken to hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
