New Delhi, November 4: The Central Government has introduced major changes to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, offering a two-year extension to 75 per cent of Agniveers who are not absorbed into the regular Armed Forces after completing their initial four-year tenure. At the end of the extended period, those willing to continue will get another opportunity for permanent recruitment, subject to prescribed eligibility conditions and selection criteria.

The Agnipath scheme was announced on June 14, 2022. Under the programme, young recruits are inducted into the Army, Navy and Air Force for an initial period of four years. Under the original arrangement, up to 25 per cent of each batch could be retained in the regular cadre after completing four years of service, based on merit, performance and the requirements of the Armed Forces. The remaining 75 per cent were required to leave the forces after completing their tenure.

The revised arrangement changes the post-service pathway for those who are not initially selected for regular enrolment. They will now be offered an additional two years of service. After completing the extended period, Agniveers who wish to continue in the Armed Forces will be considered again for permanent recruitment, subject to the prescribed selection process.

The move is expected to provide Agniveers with more time to gain military experience and improve their professional skills. It will also allow the Armed Forces to make better use of personnel who have already undergone military training and acquired experience during their initial engagement.

The revised arrangement also provides for enhanced remuneration during the additional two-year period. Agniveers who choose to leave the forces after completing the extended tenure will receive an increased Seva Nidhi package.

The government has also announced changes to the Agniveer recruitment process. Under the revised procedure, the written examination will be conducted before the physical test. Agniveers will also receive Skill Certificates recognising the training and professional capabilities acquired during their service. These certificates are expected to help them demonstrate their skills and experience while seeking employment in the civilian sector.

The changes come as the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the scheme approaches the completion of its four-year tenure in November and December 2026. The revised arrangement is expected to have a significant impact on the future service opportunities of personnel recruited under the Agnipath programme.
