New Delhi, November 5: The Election Commission of India has announced the annual Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in six states and Union Territories, with a focus on enrolling new and first-time voters and introducing safeguards against improper deletions.
The exercise will cover Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim. According to the schedule announced by the Commission, draft electoral rolls will be published on November 30, while the final rolls are scheduled for publication on January 21, 2027.
The revision will also facilitate advance applications from individuals who will become eligible to vote on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027.
The Commission has introduced safeguards to prevent improper deletion of names from electoral rolls. Applications seeking deletion in cases involving repeated or multiple entries will be subject to field verification.
Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will personally cross-check deletion applications exceeding two per cent of electors at a polling station. Similar scrutiny will apply where the same objector submits more than five objections.
The Commission has also clarified that providing Aadhaar details in Forms 6 and 8 will remain voluntary. No application for enrolment can be rejected, and no existing voter entry can be deleted, solely because Aadhaar details have not been provided.
Earlier, on October 15, the Commission had announced the SSR exercise in 17 states, including poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab.
The poll panel has directed the chief secretaries of the concerned states and Union Territories to ensure adequate manpower and resources for the revision exercise.
