GUWAHATI, Nov 7: The decomposed body of a woman who had been missing for around 12 days was found inside a sack near Ganesh Mandir at Khanapara here on Saturday, police said.

The woman was identified as Jina Baishya, around 38, a resident of Koinadhara. Local residents spotted human legs protruding from an abandoned sack at around 11.15 am and alerted the police.

A Dispur police team reached the spot and recovered the body. Baishya's family later identified it.

Her family had lodged an FIR at Basistha police station after she went missing. Her husband, Jitu Baishya, said she had left home saying she would be at ESIC Hospital with her sister on Sunday afternoon, but the family later learnt that she had not gone to the hospital.

Senior police officers and a forensic team visited the spot and collected samples. The body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Jitu Baishya alleged that his wife had been sexually assaulted and murdered. Police have not confirmed the allegation and said the cause of death would be known after the post-mortem examination and investigation.

Police were examining all possible angles in the case.
