New Delhi, November 6: The Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice to office-bearers of the Kerala unit of the Indian National Congress over a social media post targeting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M Pancholi heard the matter on Friday. The bench emphasised that the Constitution is supreme and that no individual, institution or political organisation stands above it.
“The Constitution is supreme. No individual, no institution or political organisation stands above it,” the court said in its order.
The bench also stated that judicial independence is not a matter of political convenience but a constitutional guarantee owed to the people and the Republic.
The Supreme Court further observed that any attempt to undermine the authority of the court must be dealt with an iron hand.
The proceedings follow a social media post by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee targeting CJI Surya Kant over a remark he made during a hearing last month.
The hearing concerned petitions seeking an investigation into alleged excesses by Delhi Police during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in the national capital.
Following the controversial post, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCOARA) condemned the demand for the Chief Justice's resignation.
The post was subsequently deleted amid criticism, and Kerala Congress leaders also issued an apology.
