Naharkatia, November 6: Jonmoni Gogoi, wife of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the killing of five people at Guwahati's Bilas Inn hotel, has made serious allegations surrounding her husband's involvement in the case and his subsequent death in a police encounter.

Speaking to reporters, Jonmoni claimed that Ghanakanta had no involvement in the Bilas Inn killings and was used by a larger group. She alleged that he was deliberately killed to conceal the alleged conspiracy.

She questioned why Sivasagar Police took Ghanakanta into custody in connection with another suspected case without informing his lawyer or family members, even after he had been sent to judicial custody in an earlier case.

Jonmoni alleged that Ghanakanta was called for discussions and then drawn into a conspiracy. She further claimed that his transfer to Sivasagar during the night was part of a plan to kill him.

She also maintained that her husband did not consume alcohol and could not have been involved in a crime such as murder. According to her, he was influenced and used by a larger group.

Ghanakanta's brother, Shubhakanata Gogoi, also commented on the incident. He questioned the protests organised by some people in Barpeta and made remarks about Helena Bharali.

Ghanakanta was identified as the prime accused in the killing of five people at Guwahati's Bilas Inn hotel on October 26. He was taken to Sivasagar on the afternoon of November 3 for investigation into another criminal case.

According to the report, police claimed that in the early hours of November 6, Ghanakanta tried to snatch a police pistol and open fire in the Phulpanisiga area while pretending to go aside to urinate. Police said they fired in self-defence, resulting in his death.

His body was initially taken to Jaysagar Civil Hospital in Sivasagar. It was later decided to conduct the post-mortem at Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh, following the legal requirement for three forensic experts from three medical colleges to be present in cases involving deaths in police custody.

After hours of waiting, his last rites were performed at his parental home in Jaipur Tatipathar village. His younger brother, Shubhakanata Gogoi, performed the final rites.
