Sivasagar: The Sivasagar district administration has begun an eviction drive at the historic Jamuna wetland, aiming to clear alleged encroachments from the site.

The action follows sustained protests and a long-standing demand by the All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU) for the removal of encroachments.

The total land area of the historic Jamuna wetland was 120 bighas, one katha and nine lechas, of which around 40 bighas had reportedly been encroached upon.

The administration is set to remove houses, toilets and commercial establishments allegedly constructed on the wetland land. Several families have already begun demolishing toilets and walls of their houses voluntarily.

ATASU had been demanding the removal of encroachments from the historic site for a long time. The administration's eviction drive has now begun following the organisation's continued protests.

According to historical accounts, the Jamuna was excavated during the reign of Swargadeo Siva Singha, alongside the historic Sivadol, Devidol, Vishnudol and Borpukhuri in Sivasagar.
