Guwahati: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) staged statewide protests against the decision to increase electricity tariffs. Following the organisation's call, demonstrations were held in several parts of Assam, including Morigaon and Sivasagar.
In Sivasagar, AASU activists surrounded the electricity department's office at Fukan Nagar and staged a strong protest. Protesters burnt an effigy of the power department and raised slogans against the tariff hike. A scuffle also broke out between AASU activists and police during the demonstration.
In Morigaon, the organisation's Morigaon Sadar unit also organised a protest. Demonstrators burnt an effigy of the power department and raised slogans against the Assam government and the electricity department.
The protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision to increase electricity tariffs. Through the statewide demonstrations, AASU expressed strong opposition to the government's decision on higher electricity charges.
